An Adventure Logic Model

In courses and workshops, I used the following example to illustrate the essentials of the logic model.

Goal: To explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.

Starship Enterprise (best ship in the Federation)StarTrekFEATURE

Warp drive    Multiethnic Crew      Transporter            Phasers

Communicators (flip phones)

Timeframe: 5-year mission

Programs Outputs Results (changes in KSABs) Impact (change in community)
Space travel beyond familiar boundaries.

Site visits to unfamiliar planets

# of new planets visited

# of space miles traveled

# of unfamiliar

civilizations encountered

Captain’s log records daily activities and adventures (process eval data)

Cultural mapping of space, the final frontier.

Starfleet officers gain familiarity with other people, cultures, and environment.

Increased science and environmental knowledge.

Greater understanding of life throughout the universe.

Demonstration and inspiration of a utopian society, inclusivity, and racial equality throughout universe.

Context, Supporting Forces, and Barriers (i.e. PESTs, Political, Environmental, Social, Tech Forces)

  • 23rd Century, a time in which most of the various intergalactic civilizations (with the notable exception of the warlike Klingons) had forged a lasting peace and formed the United Federation of Planets.
  • Economy that doesn’t require money
  • Klingons and Romulans

  • Utopia is difficult but possible.
  • Diversity is strength.
  • Guiding principle—Prime Directive (for Starfleet officers, General Order #1): There can be no interference with the internal development of alien civilizations.

Fistfighting and kissing seem to move diplomacy along.
